Young golfers from across Europe competed in the 2023 Junior National Championships over the weekend.
Competitors aged 11 to 18 took on 36 holes across two rounds on Saturday and Sunday at the esteemed Golf de Luxembourg-Belenhaff course, blessed with ideal weather conditions.
Both Luxembourgish and non-national players triumphed in the different categories, a testament to the Luxembourg Golf Federation’s (FLG) commitment to fostering young talent from various nationalities. The initiative aimed to boost participation and elevate the competitive nature of Luxembourg’s Junior National Championship. Notably, the championship saw participants from Luxembourg, Portugal, Slovakia, and the UK.
Following 36 holes that showcased immense skill, dedication, and passion, Stefan Rojas and Ella Miserini emerged as the Overall National Junior Champions 2023. The runners-up positions were clinched by Andrew Rojas and Maud Forzi.
In the age 12-13 category, Maxim Morn and Domitille Das Merces became national champions, while Victoria Saura-Carat and Salvador Pereira secured the runner-up spots.
The youngest competitors were tasked with playing 36 holes from yellow tees, equating to a 5,600-metre golf course, with caddies strictly prohibited.
These young athletes impressively rose to the challenge, much to the delight of parents and spectators who witnessed their enthusiasm and sportsmanship. Oliver Vajdic earned the title of U12 federal champion with Lucas Brice finishing as runner-up, while Greta Grohs and Daniel Morn, the latter being the youngest competitor in the field, were crowned U12 national champions.
While the participation in this championship wasn’t particularly vast, Mr. Andy Morn, the Juniors Coordinator at the FLG, remarked: “We have different national players attending other international events, but also we have some of them playing today. We also are working on increasing the participation in Luxembourg.”
Several opportunities await these young champions. As Morn shared, this week sees the Evian tournament, where U14 players will represent their nations against teams from 15 different countries, including Japan, Korea, USA, Mexico, Ireland, Scotland, England, Spain, and France. Furthermore, at the end of September, the Junior Interclubs will be introduced with a revamped program and organization. In collaboration with National Coach Leon Marks, Morn has attempted to make the program more engaging for children across all age groups, incorporating kids’ tees, a mini course, and an age-appropriate competition.
Golf in the Grand Duchy is an inclusive sport, welcoming individuals from all backgrounds. Mr. Morn added: “Come and try it. We have today a kid who was a bit afraid of playing, and after his first round, he said it was the best round of his life; he had fun and enjoyed it. Go to a golf club and try it; we are waiting for you. Let’s build a strong golf community for the future of our sport.”
Congratulations to all participants!
